I'm gonna need some help oh how to do this in a way that makes both me and everyone else who wants to participate happy. Your participation in this is very important because it will affect how I end up doing cameo and guest appearances in the short term and in the long term.
We will be talking about two things: Cameo appearances and Guest appearances.
I want these in Me and Him to be enjoyable. Something I will have a personal amount of fun doing. Usually it's gonna be me, Kamal, Lisha, and Meow Meow. But what if we need extra background characters? I want that space filled by someone or a group who have a recognizable face. Or at least an avatar, you know? I don't want them to be faceless randoms. In this case, we have a Cameo. I'd say more than half of the time, characters who come in as cameos won't be saying anything at all. They'll probably be doing something in the background and will only appear for a single panel. The cameo's significance is mostly small. That's why it's called a cameo.
Then we have Guests. As a Guest, you'll have a bigger role. This means your character will be drawn more than once. Guests will stick around for an entire gag. I'll do what I can to make sure the Guest is always part of a punchline. What your character is doing/saying must be relevant to what's happening in the current skit/gag. It would be really dumb if I want a guest to participate in a punchline, but someone wants me to write, "I was here," or "Hi Mom, hi Dad," instead. A non-sequitur has a time and place, but not here. That's not funny and that's not original.
I might end up putting a paywall on Guests. I can easily see a Guest appearance spanning multiple pages. These take a lot of time and I don't want to be adding a Guest to the comic for free. Either that or I'm going to keep Guests only to friends I know well or people I personally want in the comic to appear.
As for actual character portrayal: I want any characters I borrow as close to how they're supposed to be as possible. I'm a purist in that respect. But how to do it, actually? I was thinking of doing YCH-like openings.
When I finish my second draft, I'll start with a YCH-like submission. It'll be a messy preview of the next page and advertises where the YCH character will go. I may need multiple characters on occasion. Then it comes down to people actually submitting their characters to be in. Those interested in taking up a spot will have to fill in the blanks. Who am I drawing? Do I need to do anything specific and would be in-character of them to do? If they're gonna talk, what will they say?
Here's the hardest part: How do I choose who ultimately ends up getting in? I assume I'm gonna pick the person who has the best punchline, but that could be the same person over and over again who gets my sense of humor better than anyone else. And how are we going to explain how that same person has a dozen different jobs? There needs to be variety, because I certainly want more than one person participating or a small group, so... it'll be a little random?
